Children of the Spider Queen

Arachnia started this religious group on turn one with the simple message that follows:

"Greetings my Orempyk, my children!! You have done well for yourselves through times of great trial! I've searched the earth and few creatures thrive as well, in as many varied environments, as the spider; thus I have granted some of their strengths to you, my chosen people. There will still be many challenges that must be faced, but I will improve your lives and those of your children through the ages! I have a task for you to begin this process. To the youngest here I will give special knowledge which the 5 youngest of you must travel throughout your peoples to spread word of, teaching better ways to your cousins' as well as your siblings. I choose the youngest among you that they may live long enough to spread my gift."

This has done little to to develop the individual religions within the group but did put into place several central tenets that will be core to any religions descending from the way the two groups understand Arachnia's initial nature and message.

  • The Orempyk were once human, the people remember this and call humans the "old race", now they know that their special differences come from arachnia and are meant to make them BETTER than human. This message will lead to a deep seated assumption that they are BETTER than humans rather than merely different.
  • The reason the Orempyk are different from humans is because Arachnia bred with them and made them her children in the past, causing the genetic changes in them that allowed them to survive where other races have perished in the region. They are her chosen children and if they lose her favor or some other species gains it they might lose her gifts. This idea of being chosen by the goddess means that they may not let other races worship her, or if they are forced to they will not like it and may react by trying to show how special THEY are in their worship and their place in the world.
  • The goddess has promised to improve their lives throughout the ages, but also at the same time has given them a task to spread and learn to utilize those gifts themselves so they don't feel they need to EARN those gifts, but they do feel that it is their job to use the goddess' gifts correctly, not her job to simply make life easy on the people. This also builds on the fact that the transition to Orempyk from human was hard, and many human groups who were "chosen" didn't successfully make the transition due to choices they made to flee or kill babies, and this in turn reinforces the idea of the current race being special as it adds in an idea that THESE people EARNED their power, and the humans aren't just weaker, aren't just not chosen, they are actually FAILURES.

All of these things lead to a tendency to emphasize the Orempyk form, or even to worship arachnia indirectly by emphasizing the worship of the creation of the race over the goddess herself, which might lead to a tendency towards ancestor worship, or some form of worship of the race itself at some point. It also leads to a strong tendency to be possessive of their goddess, and to be a bit racist.

As these are core elements of the family itself they aren't things the goddess can change easily in a turn by simply chastising the people as they will tend to twist whatever she says to fit these core beliefs. For example the tendency to racism might be limited by a commandment to honor the humans as your ancestors and brothers, but might still show up in humans becoming a totem animal species, or becoming part of their ancestor worship without actually being seen as equal to the race itself. Alternately it would be very easy for the goddess to accidentally say something that hinted that humans were inferior and spark actual racism amongst sects of her worshipers.

Proto Statten Religion
This is a religion group within the family with it's own specific beliefs and worshipers.

~Overview~

This sect is mostly confined to the Lehrer, or teachers, who have their beginnings with young men from the most prosperous and influential village of the Statten. They were sent out with elders to represent their clans and spread the message and teaching of the goddess arachnia throughout the region. Over time they have come to view that initial settlement of Ormolu, their clans who all originate in that settlement, and below that the entire race of the orempyk as being chosen by the to receive her blessings. It is their duty to receive the blessings of the goddess, to distribute them to the people, and to make sure they are used properly and improved upon. They currently view themselves as the guardians of the Statten people and of the Orempyk race as a whole and in this view it is their right to concentrate political and economic power into their own hands so as to assure they can achieve these "noble" goals.

Over time the Lehrer have developed into a mobile settlement of their own cycling between villages where their clans have a presence and by the end of turn one that is nearly every village. Over time they have taken to adopting orphans into their number and most settlements have a special area near the center specifically for them and their trade goods. Common goods include food, information, escorted elders of other clans with sons in tow for marriage, or daughters in tow to strengthen the clans presence in the new town. Lehrer aren't just teachers, or traders, they are power and influence brokers who travel endlessly between all of the settlements. It is expected, but not yet enshrined as law, that all young Lehrer will travel to the holy settlement of Ormolu at least once in their life to see where the goddess first introduced herself to the Orempyk, who are all believed to be her own semi divine descendants.

Proto Khanti Religion
This is a religion group within the family with it's own specific beliefs and worshipers.

~Overview~

The khanti proto religion centers on people known as sprecher, or speakers. These people trace their lineage back to the first five speakers for the goddess chosen by Arachnia when she first introduced herself to the people. They consider it their job to wander between the families, and between the clans, spreading and developing the teachings of the goddess. They spread the technology she gave out and help spread any improvements people make to that technology, they also spread the word that Arachnia exists, that the people are the semi divine children of a goddess chosen by her and given gifts that place them above the old race (humans) by her blessing and her blood.

The first sprecher were simply five children taught by the goddess herself, and they went out with the sticks of peace the people always used to travel between clan territories spreading the news and teaching others, some of whom also took up the sticks of peace and began to wander. In addition to teaching these people spread news, gossip, and entertainment. Over time their numbers grew and established sprecher began to settle down amongst the clans and families, and in turn taught children in the area how to follow in their footsteps spreading the word of the goddess, and even more importantly tying the people together by spreading knowledge, gossip, stories, and ideas between the people.

Though this is a work in progress it shows exactly how much a god's initial actions influence the rest of the game. It's not just the starting income it's the point where you can have the most lasting impact on the resulting religious families. In this case the history of the people involved has had a huge influence on how the culture interprets the words of the goddess, after all this race has suffered a lot of abuse at the hands of humans in the past. Their ancestors were deformed and often crippled human children with extra eyes, extra limbs, strange skin color, they were outcasts even in societies that didn't practice outright genocide against them, and the goddess has now told them that it was all a gift from her, that they are special, and those who abused them not only are not but have failed the test and spurned the gifts remaining "only human" while they in turn embraced their destiny as the semi-divine descendants of a goddess.

In the proto religion I'm working on now this comes through as a sense of duty to be worthy of those gifts and to protect the city, the clans, and the race as a whole, which translates into a justification for a single city and it's clans accumulating a lot of political and economic power over the next turn and becomes a basis for how we, the staff, will be roleplaying the associated culture during the next hundred year span leading up to turn #1.
